Frequently Asked Questions:
Many questions can be answered in these guides -
Parents Guide to WrestlingWhat To Say And Not Say        Wrestling 101Wrestling for Dummies

Can girls wrestle?

Yes, Girls can and are encouraged to do so.  The Coyotes have a couple female wrestlers.  At each tournament there is a separate girls division so they don't have to wrestle boys unless they want to.

When/Where are tournaments?
Tournaments  are on Sundays. They last about a half day.  They take place around the state.

I'm concerned about my son/daughter getting hurt.
One of the great aspects of the sport of wrestling is that competitors are matched up by age and weight. At the local tournaments, wrestlers will compete in age ranges of two years by birth year, and in a weight bracket with a difference of no more than 10%. This allows athletes of all different body types a fair chance to compete and be successful.  While wrestling is a contact sport, it is not a high impact sport.  There is no slamming of any kind.  There is no blunt force exposure to the head.  There is no joint hyperextension.  All wrestling is closely monitored by the coaching staff and the referee during matches.  Wrestler safety is of the highest importance.  A more detailed explanation of weight divisioning  - Madision Weight System

What equipment is required?
The only mandatory equipment is headgear. Wrestling shoes are highly recommended. Singlets are not required for the regular season tournaments, but are required to wrestle in the State Tournaments.  We suggest using a  singlet as they are less prone to getting fingers or hands caught in loose fabric. Secondly, a loose shirt can block the referees view of the shoulder blades and can lead to a false pin.

Do you have to wrestle in tournaments?
No you do not.  All tournaments are voluntary.  We encourage kids to enter tournaments as they are designed for kids of similar size and experience to get matched together.  It is the best opportunity to test the skills that are being learned and participate in live wrestling that is difficult to simulate in practice.  There are also beginner tournaments specifically designed for kids new to the sport.

I can't afford the seasonal cost.
Do NOT let this be a deterrent to joining the team.  There is financial assistance available and we have begun a "used equipment" exchange where gear may be borrowed for a season.
